Brenda I. Rowe, J.D., Ph.D.
I am a criminologist with research interests focusing on cybercrime, legal issues in criminal justice, death penalty, criminal justice legislation, criminal procedure, and courts. I have published in well-regarded peer-reviewed journals such as The Prison Journal, American Journal of Criminal Justice, Criminal Justice Policy Review, Security Journal, and Journal of Criminal Justice Education. I received the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS) Dorothy Bracey/Janice Joseph Minority and Women New Scholar Award.
I am a Professor of Criminal Justice at University of Southern Mississippi. I earned a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice from Sam Houston State University and a J.D. from the University of Texas School of Law. I am licensed to practice law in Texas. My criminal justice/legal professional experience includes working as an Assistant Criminal District Attorney in Tarrant County (Fort Worth), Texas. |

Mentoring Research & Experiential Learning: Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals Tour
Mentoring students through faculty-student research collaborations is an important part of my teaching. My students have presented at national and regional disciplinary conferences. My students also participate in experiential learning, such as our tour of the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals while in New Orleans presenting our research at the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences conference. |

Application Focus
Innovative Use of Technology Experiential Learning
Experiential learning is an important component of my teaching. Students love the mock trials and mock congressional hearings I incorporate into my courses, as well as our field trips to observe court proceedings and guest speakers who help students gain a practical understanding of criminal justice. My courses also feature a focus on application, with students learning to apply course concepts to both real and hypothetical scenarios. I incorporate podcasts and videos into my courses to allow my students to hear directly from leading criminologists about their recent research, watch legal scholars debate the most pressing constitutional issues of our time, and listen to U.S. Supreme Court oral argument. I have taught face-to-face, hybrid, and online delivery formats. Courses taught include:

I am currently the Director of the School of Criminal Justice, Forensic Science, and Security at the University of Southern Mississippi.
I served as Executive Counselor of the Law and Public Policy Section of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences. I have served as a member of various ACJS committees, including the Assessment Committee, Constitution and Bylaws Committee, Academy Fellow Award Committee, and Program Committee (Section Chair - Sentencing). I also serve as a peer reviewer for journals in the discipline. I served as MADD South Texas Affiliate Advisory Board Vice Chair for Public Policy. I have hosted the MADD Health & Safety Fair and MADD Celebration of Life events on campus. I have spoken at Career Day and served as a science fair judge for local k-12 schools. |
